I've seen many sites around with large headers which asks you to click on it. apple.com is a prime example of this. For me calls to action should really be the entire site, not just a button if that makes sense. The entire site should lend itself to making the user understand their next step without having a button which screams "do this stupid". I agree call to actions are important, but at the same time i think that they don’t necessarily need to be a simple button.
